The Humanities Library (Biblioteca di Area Umanistica) was established in 2013 by the merging of the previous Humanities Departments and Faculties libraries.
In 2016 the library was named after its first Academic Director, Professor Maria José Strazzulla, archeologist, who passed away in 2013.
The library collection includes more than 40.000 documents and over 190 current journals. Almost all the books recommended for exams are available for reading or lending.
In addition, the library houses advanced textbooks, study materials and journals connected to the main study/research areas of our Department (Beni Culturali [Cultural Heritage], Lettere [Arts] e Scienze della Formazione [Education]), ancient and rare books and collections bequeathed by scholars and professors.
The library provides barrier-free access (it is wheelchair accessible)
The main reading room provides seating for 48 (including two desks for wheelchairs); most of the documents in the reading room are located on open book shelves and are directly available to readers. Requests for books and journals in closed bookstacks must be made to the staff.
In the journals room, where 10 further seats are available, users can find current ready-reference issues of journals and periodicals subscribed to by the library.
The other 2 reading rooms (Room 16, ex-Ditra, with 6 seats – and Room 12 - Ex Discum, with 8 seats) are open from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm; the ex-Ditra Reading Room is equipped with a special PC for blind or visually impaired people (access on request).
The Scarabello Reading Room, close to the Student registry office, offers 16 additional seats; it is open every day from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm (in line with the Dept. opening hours).
All university locations - including our library - offer free wireless access (Wi-Fi) in public areas at all times; it is necessary to be registered with the Unifg Wi-Fi service by our Department IT staff.

Our reading rooms provide 84 seats in total. The tables in the main reading room can be used as workstations, where users can connect their own devices.

4. OPAC
UNIFG Online Catalogue and Discovery Tool5. Circulation/Lending Service
- To check out books, you need to be an UNIFG institutional user (i.e. a student, a researcher, a professor or a staff member). To register for our lending service, you need to fill in a form with personal data, including your student number, and show a personal ID card to the staff.
- External users can borrow items but they need to be vouched for by a supervisor (professor/researcher).
- Users can borrow 3 items per week. Lending can be renewed if the borrowed book is not reserved.
- Certain resources (such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, journals, rare books and certain study books…) are not available for weekly loan. Some of those items can be borrowed for just one day: you have to return them before Library closing time. Ancient and rare books or items in a bad condition cannot be borrowed.
6. Document delivery
If you cannot find the item you need in our library catalogue, you can order it through our Document Delivery Service. We can obtain parts of books and journal articles from other libraries. Requests can be made by professors and researchers, PhD and undergraduate students, staff members. Erasmus students may also use the Document Delivery system. Requests must be made on the forms available at the help desk (recommended) or by mail to ill-ddumanistica@unifg.it
Please ensure the author, title, year and requested pages fields are accurately completed. Using the Document Delivery system you can request 3 items per week. The DD service is usually free of charge; requested materials can be picked up from Monday to Thursday (10.00 am to 01.00pm)
Libraries can request parts of our documents through the NILDE Exchange System or by mail to ill-ddumanistica@unifg.it. Individuals (i.e. non-institutional users) cannot request items in this way.

Document Delivery7. Reference Service - Bibliographical Information
The Reference Service provides information, assistance and bibliographic guidance for users involved in complex research or writing their dissertations.
It is usually available on Thursdays from 10.00am to 01.00pm, but it is possible to make an appointment on other days/ at other times, by contacting the staff.
8. Information Literacy (IL) Courses
IL courses aim to improve our users’ skills and enable them to locate, evaluate, synthesize and effectively use information from a variety of sources, in particular printed materials (books, serials...) and online databases/resources. IL helps students recognize misleading, out-of-date, or false information. It also helps them sort through the data and interpret it. Attending IL basic courses, which are completely free, is particularly recommended for first or second-year students.
No particular computer skills are required. Usually our courses are held in Italian.
For further information, you can visit the library or the Dept. web sites, follow the library social page on FB or ask the staff.
9. Copying/Scanning Items
By Italian law, up to 15% of a single item - books, periodicals issues – may be copied for personal use (L. 18/08/2000 n. 248 – c. 4 e 5 art. 68 e ss. mm. ii). Inside the library, copying/printing/scanning facilities are not available - you can ask the staff for more information; scanning and saving parts of documents using personal devices (smartphone, tablet, etc.) is permitted, within the same 15% limit.
