The University of Foggia embraces the principles of full and open access to scientific literature and promotes the free dissemination online of the results of research produced at the University to ensure the widest possible dissemination (art. 3, paragraph 6 of the Statute).
Open Access (OA) means free and immediate access to research results and data. The principle is that the results of publicly funded research should be publicly available.
The advantages for authors who deposit their contributions in Open Access are many, first of all a rapid and wide diffusion of the results of their research: rapid because they do not have to wait for the publication times typical of the press; wide because the contribution is accessible in a digital environment, spread internationally, with a consequent increase in its visibility and degree of impact. In fact, the more an article is freely downloadable, the easier it can be read and cited.
Naturally, the greater visibility of scientific production guaranteed by OA constitutes an undeniable advantage also for the University, as the institutional OA archive meets the transparency criteria required by law and makes data available in open format.
In the institutional archive of the University of Foggia, called FAIR (Foggia Institutional Archive of Research), the University's doctoral theses have recently been deposited in OA , as required by national legislation.
Furthermore, the OA institutional archive is an international showcase for the production of its professors/researchers, provides a single point of access to the entire production of the University and collects and preserves the entire scientific production of its professors/researchers.
There are two ways to Open Access:
Green road - requires the author to deposit the final version of the work (already published in traditional journals/publishing venues) in Open Archives, in accordance with the publishers' copyright policies, with two enormous advantages: one continues to publish in the reference journals/publishing venues - with particular attention to the evaluation criteria in use - and then deposits the permitted version, which circulates more and allows for visibility and recognition; it is feasible immediately, at zero cost.
Gold road - requires that the author publishes in OA journals (the list is in DOAJ – Directory of Open Access Journals) or publishes OA volumes (the list, also by publisher, is in DOAB – Directory of Open Access Books), which guarantee peer review, free for the user. In addition, many research funding agencies, both public and private, today require scholars who have obtained funding to make the results of their research freely accessible online.
In June 2016, the Academic Senate approved the University Policy and Regulations on Open Access (OA) , the result of the work carried out by the Group chaired by the Rector's Delegate for the Library System, Prof. Sebastiano Valerio, and composed as follows:
Maurizio Quinto, Rector's delegate for the Information System and Technological Innovation;
Gianpaolo Maria Ruotolo, Department of Law;
Valeria Puccini (OA sector manager), Isabella Tammone, Graziano Barca and Matteo Rinaldi (Libraries Area);
Danilo De Rogatis and Federico Bovi (Information Systems and Technological Innovation Area);
Giovanni Lovallo and Pierluigi Centola (Research and International Relations Area);
Antonio Formato and Maria Concetta Di Lorenzo (Didactic Area, Student Services and Higher Education).
